IT/IS Strategies for the Digital Age

The discussion on Digitalization specifically emphasises the strategic role of IT/IS. Digital Strategies build on powerful IT-based infrastructure and hence demand comprehensive backing through the corporate IT/IS Strategy. However, the concept of IT/IS strategy is hardly explored and defined. Accordingly, academic proposals on what to include in an IT/IS strategy differ significantly. Moreover, there are indications for a mismatch between what academics think should be the contents of IT/IS strategies and what practitioners consider relevant. The problems with IT strategy spill over to the Strategic IT/IS Planning process that remains vague as long as its output, the IT/IS strategy, is not clear.
